Eating a balanced diet filled with whole grains, lean meats, and fresh fruits and vegetables is well-known to be a healthy choice.  However, some people continue to suffer chronic health problems despite improving their diet.  When mainstream doctors are stumped, many individuals have found that removing certain foods from their diet can relieve symptoms, and in some cases completely cure the problem.  Support can be found for dietary change through a naturopath or Ottawa wellness professional.

The top two offenders:
1.    Gluten.  Individuals with digestive problems are likely to have heard of Celiac Disease, a disease in which the intestinal lining, called villi, is damaged by gluten (a protein found in wheat, rye, oats, kamut and spelt), and nutrients are not absorbed properly.  Approximately 1:100 people have Celiac Disease, and of those, most are either improperly diagnosed or completely undiagnosed.  Celiac Disease and the related condition of Gluten Intolerance can present like Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Depression, and Fibromyalgia, as well as Irritable Bowel Syndrome.  Removing gluten from the diet can help the quality of life of many people with conditions that are confounding their doctors, not only those with digestive ailments. After eliminating all gluten from the diet, most people will see a marked change within 72 hours, though it can take a couple weeks for some to see the effects.

2.    Dairy.   Humans are the only species on the planet who drink the milk of another species, and the only mammals that drink milk of any type after weaning.  Some cultures have a high rate of lactose intolerance, and dairy is not a big part of the diet in those areas.  Milk and other dairy products can cause a build-up of mucous, leading to sinus problems and ear infections.  Some studies have linked a diverse list of ailments to milk consumption - diabetes, Crohn’s Disease, osteoporosis, and rheumatoid arthritis, and further studies have found that hormones such as rBGH are linked to early puberty in preteen girls.  Dairy can take 2 weeks to a couple months to remove from the system, so patience is needed if you are eliminating dairy.

Many health conditions have a link to diet, and keeping a food log can help you determine if your symptoms follow a pattern.  For example, do you always get a headache after ordering Chinese food?  MSG could be an issue for you.  Does your rheumatoid arthritis flare after eating Italian food?  For some people foods in the nightshade family (tomato, eggplant, peppers, and potatoes) can lead to a flare.  Other food ingredients such as sulfites and phenols have been linked to health concerns, and additives such as red dye #4 and nitrates can cause issues as diverse as headaches and hyperactivity.

If you have developed health problems that are difficult to diagnose, and troublesome to treat, and a food log hasn’t been helpful, another option is an elimination or rotation diet.  If the food that is causing you trouble is in your day-to-day diet, then the food log wouldn’t have been helpful, so you need to eliminate it.  Elimination diets work by you narrowing your diet to a few foods that are the least likely to be allergenic (often lamb, rice, and pears are chosen).  If after two weeks the symptoms persist, then a new group of foods is chosen.  If the symptoms are gone, then new foods are added in one at a time, and with several days between each new food until troublesome foods are identified.  A rotation diet works by only serving a food once every 4-5 days, and works with a food log to discover the link between a symptom and a food.

1The star-shaped hormone secreting glands that sit on top of our kidneys are our adrenal glands – their purpose in life is to regulate our response to stress with the hormones cortisol and adrenaline.  They also work at carbohydrate metabolism and the regulation of sugar in our bodies. When they are overworked as we experience too much stress, they can become significantly weakened.  Weak adrenal glands can cause a whole host of problems, such as insulin resistance, diabetes, chronic fatigue syndrome and Addison’s disease.

Strengthening these glands then is key for true health and wholeness.  Chiropractic is one great way to keep all your internal organs functioning at their best, and works well in conjunction with certain homeopathic remedies found to be especially useful for the adrenals.

Homeopathic medicines work on the principle that whatever substances cause the symptoms of a disease in high doses will actually relieve the symptoms and help cure the disease in low doses. The theory behind their effectiveness is that they stimulate the body’s natural defenses.  Very minute amounts of substances are given either in tincture or pill form.  They are natural remedies, so the best results are obtained over time with consistent use.

One of the best remedies for adrenal fatigue is Natrum Muraticum – otherwise known as common table salt.  As the amount taken is minute, this remedy doesn’t satisfy the body’s need for salt.  Instead, it prepares the body to be able to effectively use the salt that it receives daily.  It is a slow acting remedy, and is best used for chronic fatigue conditions.

Another remedy is known as Argentum Nitricum, or silver nitrate.   This remedy is best for people who deplete their adrenals by always being in a hurry and impatient with others.  A strong indicator for the use of this remedy is the craving for sweets- which is also a bad habit with a detrimental effect on the adrenal glands.   Often this remedy is prescribed along with the Bach Flower Remedy Impatiens, as both work together to help calm a nervous person down and remove the negative emotion of impatience.

A third remedy that can be used is Berberis Vulgaris – this is best when adrenal fatigue is accompanied by chronic, yet moving pain.  It is also useful for those suffering from spinal irritation and in need of regular chiropractic care.

Many stores offer combinations of these three ingredients into one adrenal support supplement.  Check with your health practitioner or local health food store to find one that works best for you.  You can consult an Ottawa or Ontario wellness center for more information on homeopathic treatments.

Over 70 years ago, Dr. Edward Bach noticed that many illnesses had an emotional root cause, and that the pure dilute essences of flowers could be used to treat these emotional issues. By the 1930s, he had identified 38 negative conditions of mind and the corresponding diseases they caused – and identified remedies for each.  Today, most health food stores and whole foods grocery stores carry Bach Flower Remedies next to the homeopathic section – as they are a popular alternative medicine for many.

The Bach Flower Remedies may be used by Seattle, New York, or Ottawa wellness specialists to treat depression, grief, a feeling of overwhelm, nervousness, low self-esteem, despair, anxiety, and many other emotions that cause chemical changes in our bodies and destroy our overall health.

Each Bach Flower Remedy comes in a small brown bottle with an eye dropper. The daily dosage is just a few drops taken either on the tongue or in a glass of spring water, so it does work in similar fashion to homeopathy.   It is prepared in an alcohol base, so is not a suitable treatment for alcoholics or those with liver issues.

A very special Bach Flower Remedy is the Rescue Remedy, which is a blend of several essences.  It is used in emergency situations, such as a traumatic event or injury, to help keep calm, cool, and collected – and also to heal quickly.

Many patients suffering from chronic pain have underlying emotional issues that have created an imbalance in their bodies. A good natural practitioner will start by asking the patient questions to determine these underlying issues.   For example, if they are impatient types who are never satisfied with their progress in life as nothing happens fast enough for them, the Impatiens remedy is ideal.    In this case, chronic back or myofacial pain can be occurring because of the constant state of stress they have placed their body under.

In most cases, a combination of remedies will be chosen as multiple emotional issues are present.   Many patients will heal from the original issues only to have new ones emerge – as the onion is peeled, deeper levels of cause and effect become obvious to both the patient and the practitioner.

Sometimes patients suffer from chronic back or neck pain because of a severe trauma that took place in their past.  The Star of Bethlehem essence is especially useful for helping their bodies release the memory of this past emotional or physical trauma.  Some of this essence rubbed on scar tissue will also help it to heal more quickly, and is used often for burn victims.

In our current economic climate, many people are working more hours due to layoffs and other changes at their job.  With more responsibilities and more time at work, people are becoming very stressed, and need advice and assistance on how to best relax after a long day so their personal time is theirs to enjoy, rather than colored with the stress from the work environment.  Other people might be stressed by their home environment, and need to relax before starting a day of work.  In either case, finding the best way to achieve peace of mind is essential.

Learning a variety of relaxation techniques can help you de-stress and become calm before your work, dinner date, weekend plans, or other activities.  Relaxation techniques are even more important because health care professionals have found that stress can have a negative impact on your physical health.

The first steps most people try for relaxation include a warm cup of herbal tea, classical music, deep and calming breaths, and using technology such as a white noise machine or a small waterfall.  These can be effective for some people, but others might need more than that in order to relax relatively quickly.

A more intensive and effective relaxation technique is meditation.  Visualization techniques and auditory guides can help you imagine yourself away from the stress.  While it can take some time for you to be accustomed to the technique, when used regularly, meditation can help you relax quickly and easily.  Aromatherapy is a relaxation technique which can be used alone or in conjunction with meditation to trigger a relaxation response in your body.  If you have a bit more time and free space, yoga exercises can also help your mind and body relax.

When you are finding it difficult to relax, sometimes you need assistance from a natural health provider. One prominent Ontario chiropractor recommends utilizing biofeedback to relax.  Biofeedback can also analyze the various stresses that are the underlying causes of many health problems.  The screening is brief and non-invasive and can help you learn more about the needs of your body and mind.

As anyone who has had gotten a headache after a stressful day or an upset stomach before a presentation knows, stress can create real physical health problems.  Finding ways to help your mind and body relax are critical to your physical and mental health.  When your health has become compromised by the stress in your life, wellness professionals may suggest other natural health options, including chiropractic adjustment, massage, homeopathy, holistic health treatments, and making dietary and lifestyle changes.

Every person has different needs, and each individual will find their body responds slightly differently to these relaxation techniques.  If you are having a difficult time calming and de-stressing your mind and body, speaking to someone familiar with a variety of natural health care treatments can be a wonderful first step towards achieving peace of mind and body.

Stress begins in different moments and ways. It attacks us from multiple angles, and finding its sources can be a tedious job that ends up increasing it (since stress itself becomes a problem we’re aware of, one we don’t have time to solve). And it doesn’t get any better when we’re told that the very cause of stress lies at the core of modern life: what are we supposed to do? Move out of town; start a new life in a farm? I bet farmers suffer from stress, too. Besides, we’re so used to living in the city that we would probably run away from the country in less than a minute.

So, instead of trying to find the causes of stress, go for a practical solution, something that neutralizes it without paying too much attention to it. Here’s a quick guide to hit stress back:

1) Exercise

Walk for twenty minutes each day. Feel the pavement under your feet. Breath calmly while you let the vision of your hands strangling your boss fade away for a moment. It is scientifically proven. It changes body chemistry, the nervous system clears, the inner electrical storm goes away, and neurons go out and dance in the streets of your brain. Aerobic exercise is especially good for producing endorphins in the body.

2) Correct your poor posture

Poor posture when you’re sitting can result in tension, headaches, back pain, or lack of focus. Try to be aware of your posture and correct it. How? Align your ears over your shoulders. Raise both arms straight up, along side your ears. Remember to keep your ears aligned! Bend forearms toward shoulders to touch your shoulder blades. Do 10 repetitions with both arms, then alternate 10 reps for each arm separately. Align ears with shoulders. Raise both arms out to sides at shoulder length. Hold for a slow count of ten. Slowly lower arms to sides, counting ten as you lower. Slowly raise arms back to shoulder height, counting to ten as you raise arms. Do ten reps, constantly checking your alignment! If ten reps are too many to start, do as many as you can. You should at least feel a slight fatigue in the shoulder muscles.

3) Take some time to do what you like

Do it alone, and away from everything. Don’t let every day issues and their noise interfere in your moment of relaxation. Only you can decide what this activity is: reading, painting; it can be any hobby in the world.

4) Get a professional massage

This is a great and natural way to reduce stress. It’s been practiced for thousands of years, and different cultures have treated it as a science and have developed their own disciplines around it. If you live near Ontario, asking an Ontario chiropractor for a referral to a great registered massage therapist can lead you to a healthier, and more relaxed, life.
