As we approach middle age, many of us start to focus on our health more than we did in our youth. It becomes important to stay fit and healthy, and increase the chances that we will be active enough to play with our grandchildren – and be around long enough to enjoy them in our golden years.
Many studies have been done on longevity. Unfortunately, we have no control over one key element which is heredity. There is a lot to be said for having good genes! However, there are a lot of factors that ARE under our control – and simple lifestyle changes can have a large impact on our lifespan, and our genes.
Cardiovascular health is of utmost importance as we age. It is critical to maintain a healthy diet by restricting fried foods, animal fats, and prepackaged foods laden with nasty chemicals and preservatives. Eating more fruits and vegetables and omega-3 laden fishes is an easy way to improve our health.
Exercise is often neglected in our busy schedules. Taking a daily walk or joining a gym is a great way to get the 20 minutes of aerobic exercise per day that doctors recommend. This keeps both our bodies and minds healthy, and increases blood flow to our hearts and major organs.
Proper stress management is another way of increasing health. If you are a type A personality that tends to anger easily, learn to take deep breaths and let it go! Tai Chi or yoga is wonderful for managing stress, as is meditation and simply listening to good music.
It has been proven that people who have strong connections to others live longer. Take time for your friends and family, and you will find that you are happier and more fulfilled. If you have few friends and no family nearby, consider getting a pet. Pet owners are known to be more mentally fit than non pet owners, and walking a dog is a great way of getting your daily exercise.
Eliminating negative health habits such as overeating, drinking too much, and smoking are critical to longevity. Our bodies let us get away with these sins in our youth, but as we age, they take their toll on us quickly! If you need help getting rid of addictions, consider hypnosis or a class. Many health organizations offer free classes – and many employers offer free programs for their employees for smoking cessation as well as other addictions.
Don’t forget that any Vancouver, Montreal, or Ontario chiropractor has the skills and expertise to treat those chronic symptoms that might plague you through holistic and natural methods, guaranteed to improve your quality of life.
