Crohn’s disease is a chronic inflammatory disease, which affects the alimentary tract, anywhere from the mouth to the anus.  This inflammation can extend throughout all the layers of the stomach wall and can occur in patches, or in normal tissue.  The exact cause of Crohn’s disease is yet unknown, but many have recognized a link to stress and family history.  Crohn’s disease is a chronic disease for which there is no cure, but only treatments.

Diet is an important factor in Crohn’s disease and with the right food and supplements, your body can begin to heal itself naturally, causing your Crohn’s disease to go into remission for an extended period of time, sometimes even permanently.  In conjunction with natural treatments from your Ontario chiropractor, and the right diet, together with natural herbs and supplements, your body may be able to heal itself naturally from this chronic disease altogether.  Here are some natural treatments and supplements for the treatment of Crohn’s disease.

Herbal and homeopathic remedies can be effective in treating symptoms of Crohn’s disease and address the underlying causes of the illness, while aiming to restore the body’s natural healing properties.  They can help to restore harmony and equilibrium in the body, and provide a supportive platform to bring natural healing remedies into the affected body systems.  These remedies will be specifically tailored by your Ontario wellness physician, to meet your specific needs, and to address specific symptoms.

Some examples of these herbal remedies used in conjunction with treating Crohn’s disease include Filipendula ulmaria, Ulmus fulva, and Matricaria recutita just to name a few.  These herbs may be recommended alone, or in combination with another, depending on the individual’s specific health needs.  These herbs can help to strengthen the digestive health of the patient, as well as decrease inflammation in the bowel walls.  These herbs can be a natural option for the treatment of Crohn’s disease, without all the dangerous side effects associated with prescription drugs and steroids currently used for the treatment of this illness.

Another herbal treatment that has shown to have success in treating Crohn’s disease is green tea.  Green tea has been well known for thousands of years for its soothing qualities as well as its miraculous healing properties.  But only until recently, has green tea been used in the treatment of Crohn’s disease.  Green tea has natural anti-inflammatory properties that can help to reduce inflammation in Crohn’s patients, as well as reduce pain and provide temporary relief.  Green tea has also, in some cases, been found to ward off cancer with long term use, which can be a major concern down the line, with patients with Crohn’s disease.

Ginko biloba has also been seen to have positive effects in the treatment of Crohn’s disease, and other inflammatory-related illnesses like colitis, and IBS.  Ginko biloba is particularly effective in treating inflammatory diseases like Crohn’s because of it’s rich antioxidant properties.  These antioxidant properties help to clear out bacteria in the intestinal wall, reducing inflammation and pain associated with Crohn’s disease.  Consult your Ontario wellness physician for more information about herbal remedies and treatments available for Crohn’s disease.

Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition where you may feel chronic pain in different, specific areas of your body, such as the legs or your joints.  But fibromyalgia pain isn’t limited to only your legs or your joints; it can plague other areas of the body as well, such as the neck, shoulders and back.  These same people suffering from fibromyalgia may also suffer from secondary symptoms related to their constant fibromyalgia pain, such as depression, stress, irritable bowel syndrome, sleeplessness and nausea.  Fibromyaliga can be a chronic disease which may last for many years, and there currently is not one known cure for this condition.  But with the help of your Ontario wellness practitioner, a positive attitude, and the right information, you can start treating your fibromyalgia with herbal supplements and remedies today.

St. John’s Wort — St John’s Wort has shown to be successful in treating certain cases of fibromyalgia by reducing tenderness in the affected areas, improving immune system response, as well as reducing pain.  St. John’s works by helping you relax, while loosening tension in the major muscle groups.  St. John’s Wort can be used as a stress reducer and a pain reliever as well.

Siberian Ginseng – Siberian Ginseng can be a great herbal remedy for fibromyalgia and has been used in treating muscle pain for hundreds of years.  Siberian Ginseng has been known to be effective in reducing muscle inflammation, as well as increasing energy and mood in the fibromyalgia patient.  Dosage can be increased with time.

Garlic — Garlic has been known to be very successful in treating many of the symptoms of fibromylagia.  Garlic works the same as a natural antibiotic in the body, enhancing the immune system, and strengthening the body’s reaction to disease.  Garlic can also help to clear the pollutants in the body supply, improving blood circulation and improving muscle and brain function as well.

MSN — MSN is a natural compound that can already be found in the body that can do great things for fibromyalgia suffers.  Many times fibromyalgia sufferers have a deficiency of this natural occurring compound in their bodies, and they no longer can produce adequate amounts for the body to stay healthy.  Some symptoms of MSN deficiency in the body might include random muscle pain, muscle weakness, chronic fatigue.  MSN can be found in many fresh fruits and vegetables, and serves as a natural anti-inflammatory and pain reducer as well.

Yoga — Yoga can be an excellent practice for relieving stress, strengthening and stretching important muscle groups, and maintaining a better balance in life.  But yoga can also do wonders for people who may be suffering from fibromyalgia.  Yoga can help strengthen certain muscle groups affected by the fibromyalgia disease, as well as energize the body by improving circulation and reducing fatigue.  Patients practicing regular regimes of yoga are seen to suffer less pain, and have more improved movement than patients not practicing any form of yoga exercise.

In their search for more natural options to maintain health and treat disease, many people ask and research if regular chiropractic care has any meaningful benefits.  We have to say that, yes, it most definitely has, and we will explain why.

First, it is important to understand how you define prevention.  In the field of traditional medicine, prevention means detecting a serious disease early in its development, or employing toxic shots or medicine which present side effects that are much worse than the condition itself.

What traditional medicine hasn’t accounted for, and what most doctors and patients ignore, is that these methods only work when the illness is already present in the body.  Do you really think this is prevention?  Isn’t it obvious where the medical field’s main interest resides?  Yes, sadly, in your wallet.

Let’s just analyze one common procedure: mammograms.  It has been shown that 70% to 80% of the positive findings in a mammogram are proven negative by following biopsies, and around 25% of the real cancer cases are missed by mammograms.  Mammograms employ very high doses of ionizing radiation to create an x-ray image of the tissue in the breast.  This type of radiation is known to increase the activity of cancerous cells, and, in reality, can cause cancer to appear.

Just consider the proven fact that around 52% of women may have inactive cancerous cells in their breasts that may never become active; however, when exposed to high doses of radiation, this can change.  In other words, receiving regular mammograms may in reality increase many women’s chances of developing cancer.

A study performed not long ago showed that out of every 2000 women who received mammograms for more than 10 years, only one got a chance for a longer life, while 10 had to go through pointless and most likely harmful procedures.  The hidden truth behind these studies is how profitable these procedures are for the cancer industry.  In reality, mammograms are not wildly promoted because they detect cancer; these are forced on women because they mean big bucks.  And very sadly, this is what many think preventive medicine is all about.

Our health is always changing.  You can easily mark a scale from 0 to 10, where 0 is “almost dying” and 10 is “perfect health”, and on a daily basis, track where your status is.  You can also think what actions could increase the number and which ones will decrease it or maintain it.  The truth is that preventive medicine is anything that prevents or minimizes your moves towards the low numbers, while at the same time moves you up the scale.

In other words, the benefits must overpower the negatives, and these should be much better than doing nothing.  So, what would be the deeper functional benefits here?  Why keep getting regular chiropractic care if you feel and look like a million bucks?

Well, this regular practice basically helps you move towards the upper end of the scale every single day.  A chiropractic adjustment is much more than cracking your back; it enhances your nervous system’s ability to work at its best.  The nervous system controls and manages almost every body function, thus, it is essential for good health, just as much as good nutrition, exercise, and enough sleep are.  Whether a person is healthy or sick, chiropractic care will provide great benefits and almost no disadvantages.

Consider it this way:  if you give your car and teeth maintenance, why not give it to your body?  Remember that you can always get a new car, but you will never be able to get a new body if it fails.

Ask your Ottawa chiropractor about the many benefits that come with regular chiropractic care. You will be amazed and most certainly relieved to have found such a powerful health alternative.

Every parent has been through it: endless hours of anguish because the baby doesn’t stop crying and you have no idea what’s wrong.  In the end, you join him or her in the desperation, and now there are two inconsolable souls under the same roof.

If your baby is crying non-stop, for hours a day, for several days, and several weeks, he or she is probably suffering from colic.  A colicky baby can be spotted because he or she will be crying out loud, with the legs flexed, the abdominal muscles tensed, and the fingers clenched.

A baby starts suffering from colic at three weeks of age and it can last until he or she is three months old, sometimes even longer.  Around 10% to 20% of babies suffer from colic, and this condition creates a lot of stress for the parents, who feel completely helpless when faced with their child’s pain.  Inevitably, this stress will get in the way of the bonding between mother and baby, and may even increase the risk of post-partum depression.

Studies have shown that babies who suffer from colic are more likely to be victims of child abuse and of shaken baby syndrome.  Since it is not known what causes colic, it is difficult to treat the condition; however, the best results have been achieved through a natural method: chiropractic care, with 94% of babies experiencing less colic after going through chiropractic adjustments.

In fact, chiropractic care has proven more efficient than dietary changes, medication, and positioning, through spinal manipulation.  Two groups of babies suffering from colic were defined for a clinical trial.  One group received chiropractic care for two weeks and the other group was given dimethicone for the same period of time.  The babies that received chiropractic care showed a reduction in crying of 67%, while the babies on the medication showed only a 38% reduction.

Another study performed with 316 babies confirmed the efficacy of chiropractic care to treat colic.  In this 3-month study, the mothers recorded in a diary the amount of crying of their babies.  The results were positive in 94% of the babies, and the improvements happened after only three chiropractic adjustments in a period of two weeks.

Chiropractic care has become a very cautious, gentle and effective natural way of treating colic in babies.  The adjustments performed are very precise, soft, and completely safe.

If you would like to find out more, contact your Ontario chiropractor and ask for her opinion and advice.  A chiropractor must be certified to work with babies, thus make sure you get the appropriate advice in order to get your baby the best professional help.

If you are a long time migraine sufferer, you may have consulted an Ottawa wellness physician to determine what triggers your migraine and the best ways to avoid them.  But for the person who suffers from migraines on an infrequent basis, it can be much more difficult to figure out what sends us into those sudden attacks of misery.

Oftentimes a full blown migraine can be avoided if we can nip it in the bud.  But in order to do so, we have to have some sense of what causes it in the first place. There are a number of very common things that can trigger migraines in susceptible people.  If you have migraines even occasionally, here is a short synopsis of 5 of the most common migraine triggers:

Food
It is believed by many migraine sufferers that foods containing tyramine are some of the worst migraine triggers.  This chemical is found in many foods that are aged or preserved such as cheese, processed meats and wine. It can also form in leftovers that have been stored in the fridge for several days. Tyramine causes blood vessels to dilate and this action could be what sets the migraine process in motion.   Another suspected ingredient that seems to play a significant role is MSG, a preservative common in processed foods.

Weather
For a long time, researchers have identified barometric pressure as a cause for headaches, and it has more recently also been indicated as a cause for migraines as well. The theory behind this is based on the fact that changes in outside pressure result in changes in oxygen to the brain, which may in turn cause blood vessels to dilate in order to compensate for this.  Weather headache triggers have become significant enough that web sites such as weather.com even have an aches and pains forecast!

Hormones
Any situation that involves hormonal changes such as pregnancy, puberty, menopause or hormone therapy is considered a definite migraine trigger.  Many women find that menstrual cycles and the starting and stopping of oral contraceptives to be their most significant trigger of all.  Studies indicate that there is a definite connection between serotonin, our brain’s “feel good” hormone, and estrogen.  When estrogen drops, so does serotonin, possibly resulting in a migraine.

Environment
For some whose migraines can’t be directly related to triggers from food, the weather or hormones, it is often much more difficult to determine the source.  If you are having difficulty identifying your migraine triggers, it might be wise to look to an environmental source such as air pollutants, cigarette smoke, perfumes and air fresheners or perhaps even the paint or wood finishes in and around your home.

Stress
Stress as a trigger for migraines is the one element that really hasn’t yet been positively documented. It is more the way a person deals with stress that actually becomes the trigger.  For example, someone who grinds their teeth may find that doing so can trigger the onset of a headache.

Most of us have employed tried and true methods that we use to help us work through the stresses of everyday life.  Health conditions such as chronic pain, weak immune systems and similar kinds of conditions often treated by your Ottawa wellness practitioner, are often helped by these same practices.  But what do we do when we find ourselves in a situation where these normal means fail us and stress stays parked on our doorstep?  Why not try something new and unusual to keep stress at bay.  Consider some of these:

Qigong
If standard methods of meditation have left you unsatisfied, why not give Qigong a try?  Pronounced (chee-gong) it is an ancient type of Chinese meditation that incorporates repetitive, flowing dance moves and relaxed, focused breathing. The goal of Qigong, like any form of meditation is to rid the body of stress by slowing the heart rate, lowering blood pressure and adrenalin levels.  Classes in Qigong are offered through community groups such as the YMCA and others.

Geocaching
If you are looking for a new recreational activity to take your mind off the worries of day to day business, Geocaching may be just what you’re looking for.  Anyone can enjoy the adventure which includes using a GPS to locate a hidden cache where you can sign your name, take a little trinket from the cache and leave a small token of your own in its place.  Geocaching gets you out and about and is a great way to take your mind off your troubles!

Reiki
Reiki is the Japanese word for “universal life energy.”  It involves a type of massage that includes little if any actual touching. Practitioners of Reiki believe they can channel energy through their hands as they move them slightly above the patient’s body to promote balance and healing. There is a national organization which can provide further information and details of the practice of this healing art.

Labyrinth
Although the history of the labyrinth dates back thousands of years, strolling through a labyrinth is a relatively new idea for folks to use as a way to relax and ease stress.  Many hospitals and therapy centers have built labyrinths on their grounds for the use of both patients and their visitors. Unlike a maze, a labyrinth involves no tricky pathways or dead ends.  A labyrinth stroll is designed to be a positive experience where the user strolls one continuous path to the centre of the labyrinth. Once in the centre, walkers take a few moments to pause and meditate before retracing their steps out of the labyrinth.  A search on line should reveal locations where you can go to take a labyrinth stroll.

Hot Springs
If you can get to one, bathing in a hot spring is a fantastic way to reduce stress.  It is believed that the old saying, “soaking away your troubles” can actually happen as the hot mineral water reduces levels of cortisol which in turn reduces inflammation making your joints and muscles feel so much better.

If you are a parent, you certainly know about the suffering an ear infection can give your baby.  It means pain, irritability, and endless nights of sleep deprivation, and as you may already know, most of these infections are caused by a virus, in other words antibiotics are not the appropriate option.

When a child is given high doses of antibiotics to fight an ear infection, the ‘super bugs’ develop.  These are bacteria resistant to antibiotics, so the child is given stronger antibiotics only to allow bacteria to conquer these too.  In addition, antibiotics change the gastrointestinal function because besides killing bad bacteria, they also get rid of the good one, which is indispensable for a healthy digestion, increasing the chance for candida, yeast, and thrush infections.

So, what can you do as a parent to get your child out of his or her misery and prevent this pain from happening again?  Given that traditional medicine hasn’t proved very effective and that the continuous use of medication can have serious health consequences, many parents are researching alternative and natural remedies as an option.  Some of the most popular remedies amongst these are chiropractic care, some foods, and essential oils and herbs.

Chiropractic care is the most used type of alternative medicine.  It cares for patients by correcting misalignments in the spine and other joints that get in the way of the nervous system’s functioning.  This system controls all body processes, including the immune system and lymphatic drainage from the head and ears, and if it is not working in the right way, nothing else will.  However, treating deficient lymphatic drainage and immune system through a chiropractor will help the body heal the ear infection.

Children who visit the chiropractor get a soft and exact adjustment as well as a lymphatic massage.  The chiropractor may also recommend certain diets, for example, one without dairy, to decrease mucous.

Essential oils can make the child more comfortable while he or she is suffering pain.  Eucalyptus oil in a humidifier can alleviate congestion; some tea tree oil with olive oil becomes a great massage oil that you can stroke from behind the ears diagonally down to the collarbone; and warm garlic with mullein oil can relieve pain and inflammation when poured into the ear, just make sure the eardrum is intact before putting oil in the ear canal.

Herbs like Echinacea, goldenseal, olive leaf, and St. John’s Wort are great options too.  The first two speed healing by improving the immune system, olive leaf fights infection, and the last one possesses antiviral properties and reduces inflammation.

No matter the kind of treatment you choose for your child, if he or she is getting worse, contact your doctor immediately; nothing should get in the way of ensuring your child’s safety and wellbeing.

An Ottawa chiropractor is one of the best options out there when looking for alternative medicine options for your child.  Her mission and vision are directed towards promoting total wellness, education, healing, and transformation, at the deepest levels of the body, mind, and spirit.

More and more women are recognizing the value of chiropractic care as a part of prenatal care; however, the number of women who know about the benefits a chiropractor can provide for her and her new baby is still very low.

It is no secret that a woman’s body goes through a wide array of changes during pregnancy, and one of them happens directly as the baby grows inside of her.  When this happens, mom’s musculoskeletal system has to adjust to fit the growing uterus and get ready for delivery.  This is when chiropractic care comes in to save the day.  It helps the woman’s body stay aligned during the pregnancy process and keeps the nervous system working appropriately.

Most pregnant women experience lower back pain, hip pain, and pubic symphysis due to the stress the body is in because of the growth of the baby and the changes that happen in order to accommodate the new life.  As the belly grows, the woman’s gravity center moves and it is difficult for the lower back and pelvis to adjust to this change so quickly, causing stress and misalignments or subluxations, which produce pain and dysfunctions.  These conditions affect the uterus and the position of the baby inside the belly.

The uterus is connected to the pelvis by three types of ligaments:

-    The broad ligament
-    The uterosacral ligaments
-    The round ligaments

These ligaments’ function is to maintain the uterus at the proper place within the pelvis and to give support while the uterus grows to shelter the fetus.  If the pelvis is subluxated, the ligaments torque and directly affect the uterus’ position, causing the baby to shift from its optimal position into a breech or transverse baby.

The chiropractor’s mission is to correct any subluxations in the pelvis to balance the uterus and allow the baby to position itself correctly.  These adjustments are gentle, very specific, and completely safe.

Besides making life much more comfortable for the future mom, when the pelvis is aligned, the birth process is faster, safer, and easier.  One of the most common reasons for c-sections is a baby in breech or transverse position, and although these are done all the time, one must never forget that a c-section is a major surgery and encompasses all major surgery risks.  Women should try to give birth naturally, through the birth canal, in order to lower any type of risk, and to be able to be up and running as soon as possible to start taking good care of their precious new babies.

And to help Ontario women, there is an Ontario wellness solution in chiropractic care.  A professional chiropractor knows how special your body is and how much care you require during the normal periods of life, all the more during pregnancy.

Don’t let your pregnancy stop you from living your life. Stay active and happy while preparing for the arrival of your child so that you can give it all your love and attention without sacrificing your health.

For many people, chronic indigestion is a real problem.  While not always an indication of serious health issues, it can be both irritating and frustrating to deal with, especially for those who prefer not to use a lot of over the counter medications and treatments.  Fortunately, there are a number of natural remedies and preparations that can be found both readily and inexpensively that provide quick satisfactory solutions.  Here are a few actions you can take to help keep those bothersome digestive problems from getting out of hand.

o    One of the first things to try and prevent is over eating.  As hard as it may be through holiday season, it is always wise to be prudent about what’s on your plate.  Try to avoid carbonated beverages with your food, and always eat slowly being sure to chew your food completely.  If you do over indulge, papaya tablets may help ease temporary indigestion.

o    Peppermint or chamomile tea is believed to settle the stomach and calm the digestive tract.

o    Exercise can be very effective for keeping digestive troubles under control.  A short walk after eating may help stimulate the digestive process and prevent that sluggish bloated feeling that persists if you remain inactive after eating.  Although it is often what we most prefer to do, it is never a good idea to lie down right after eating.

o    Another possible treatment for digestive problems is citrus juice or apple cider vinegar; both have properties that help to soothe stomach upsets.  Drinking a glass of water with a bit of lemon juice or apple cider vinegar added is the easiest way to use these two natural ingredients.

o    Many folks believe that aniseed is an effective cure for indigestion as well.  Perhaps this belief stems from its inclusion in old tonic called gripe water that has been given to infants for many years to calm colic and upset tummy.

o    Ginger is widely recognized as a stomach soother but is used primarily to treat stomach nausea as opposed to indigestion.  Made into a warm tea, however, it can also help promote good digestion.

While these natural cures can be helpful for day to day indigestion, you should not put off visiting your Ottawa wellness practitioner for advice if you think your symptoms are more severe.  Digestive troubles can sometimes be the result of more serious underlying causes such as ulcers or gall bladder problems.

Relaxing in a sauna is a much enjoyed activity of many people, but it can be particularly helpful if you suffer from chronic fatigue.  It has been determined that chronic fatigue syndrome is often related to toxins in the body being trapped and thus increasing those feelings of fatigue and sluggishness.  If the pathways to releasing those toxins can be opened, a person will often begin to feel more energetic and healthy.

It is important to understand, however, that it is the infared sauna that works best in this manner and not the traditional dry sauna heat. In a regular sauna, most of the water on the body is actually condensation and not sweat.  With an infared sauna, the sweating is much more profuse which results in much higher levels of toxins being eliminated. The infared rays of this type of sauna get deep into the cellular tissues and set all types of activity into motion. Unlike other types of heat, this infared heat has the power to remove toxins that are stored way down inside the body.

The radiant heat of an infared sauna raises the body’s core heat, expands blood vessels and calms the central nervous system, which can contribute to relaxation of muscles, reduced blood pressure, improved digestion, and boost the immune system. In addition, the increased sweating helps to remove unwanted toxins from the body.

Many people who have previously felt saunas to be quite uncomfortable have changed their thinking once they’ve tried an infared sauna. Because the infared rays heat the body only, the air surrounding you in the sauna remains cool.  This eliminates that suffocating feeling that many people associate with saunas.

Infared sauna treatments are available at spas and health care facilities, but you can also install a home sauna kit with this kind of heat as well.  There are even portable models that fold up and can be carried with you for trips away from home.

If you are trying infared saunas for the first time remember to start out taking short saunas until your body is used to the feeling, and remember to drink plenty of water to keep yourself hydrated.  It is also recommended that you shower after your sauna to prevent toxins from being reabsorbed into the body.

As popular and well researched as this regime has become for treating conditions such as chronic fatigue, you should always consult your Ontario wellness practitioner before proceeding with any treatments.
